Your first rank is at lvl 10, that rank is giving to you. Just like that. U have to work for more. My personal record is something with general III (look my profile for more info about my personal record [:..Qusaa..:])

So a couple days ago I was a Major General. I stop playing for about a day, come back, and then find myself ranking up to Private III in my first battle. What happened?

maybe you were major general II, leveled up to general II but didn't saw it, and the you level up to private III. =P

I like this way to level up. I think that it works quite well in the game. I actually haven't been playing for as long as most people so I haven't had the enjoyment of getting my first rank (I'm almost level 9).
I'm not sure if anyone told people yet (because I only read the first few pages of posts as I couldn't be bothered reading 72 pages) but roman numerals don't go like XLIXX and things like that; I'm not perfect with roman numerals but I'm good enough to know that there is some order to the letters that create the numerals (these are the romans we're talking about here). Basically, I is 1, V is 5, X is 10, L is 50, C is 100, D is 500, and M is 1,000; now please correct me if I'm wrong but they are the letters used within roman numerals. You do get some long numbers like LXXXIV which is 84 (L is 50, XXX is another 30, V is 5 but the I before V means 1 before 5 which is 4, therefore equaling 84).
I thank the creators etc for making this wonderful ranking system and hope that everyone, in the end, doesn't complain about it just because they don't understand roman numerals and are too lazy to search is up on the internet which I'm guessing is what some people have done (I personally didn't have to do any research as I already knew basically all there is to know about roman numerals as it is actually quite simple to use once you know what you're doing).
