With as many people as there are using the claw, a handful of people getting 10+ unlims in a comparably smaller number of claws is not proof of anything.

Alright. On the other hand my list for example has a ton of items that aren't from the Claw. But still it would be unfair to say that anyone can do it, since I've been doing it on/off for 4,5 years. But getting the basic gear and being able to compete, very doable.

I do agree that going as far with it like the lists in this thread aren't really possible to freeload for everyone, it would take multiple years.

Judging by the arguments you've provided, it seems that you're discounting the idea of statistical research in its entirety.

If we were to give each possible prize a rating (0.00 being a 1-day emote and 1.00 being an unlimited weapon, for example), it'd be safe to assume that over the course of a year the distribution of the prizes would prove to be a Gaussian distribution. Sure, there would be players on the extremes of the distribution, which'd either be very lucky or very unlucky, but 64% of the players would fall between μ-σ and μ+σ. Keep in mind that we're talking about the quality of Claw-drops here, not just limited or unlimited.

While the 'data' I gathered over the past year is only one sample, it should prove to be a representative one, since it was gathered over such a long period of time.

Not necessarily.
Losing a slot machine for instance isn't bad luck, it's just what happens most of the time to most people, as is the case with the claw.

Individual players, and for that matter, individual heroes getting lots of permanent items from the claw is not the norm, and I find it silly that people try to pretend that it is because the universe wants to be nice to them.
Source of those "stats"...??? Wink

BTW the Claw is not like slot machines. The Claw gives you a reward everytime. Even a 10 widgets/1-day items are useful...

Aaaaand this is the point when I'm going to stop discussing this with you as I know this won't lead anywhere. Ghostie's sunshine thread taught me... Big Grin (no offence)

I have no idea why you think one person can be an example for everyone for an entirely chance based system.
Your claw results are no more a representation of what people can expect of the claw than Charles Wells is what people can expect from a gambling venture. Your results are an example of the claw, not a standard of it. The only thing your thread proves is that *you* had a good existence as a free player. It does not at all make it a certainty. It shows that it is possible. Which frankly is news to only the most pessimistic people.

Statistics are the science of predictions. Not what will happen. Any chance below 100% (the claw) means nothing is guaranteed (your claw results).

I've used the claw for a single hero for more than a year, so I could make this exact same thread, but my findings would be completely opposite of yours, showing a very different picture on the claw. But, it wouldn't be anymore accurate than your thread is for the obvious reason that one person's experience can't represent an entire communities'. There is no norm to the claw, there are people who get many items, there are people who get a few items here and there, and there are people who hardly get anything. With infinite time it would even out, but infinite anything is not a real world possibility.

"Judging by the arguments you've provided," you're discounting all the people who are *not* getting these kinds of results from the claw just because you happen to be getting them.

Did you not once think that *your* claw results are one of those outliers of distribution you mentioned? If they aren't I'd like to know how or why your results shouldn't be viewed as atypical as you think they aren't.

If you haven't realized, statistics are very easily skewed, and for an Item-a-day distribution experiment, only become more so the fewer people you use. In your case, you're only using yourself to represent the entire game population's item probability.

The overall average of permanent items is much lower when you account for multiple people's experiences with the claw. This is because your taking more than one person's luck into account.
If you used multiple accounts, your numbers would've been a lot lower because people are not necessarilly going to get the same amount of permanent items around the same times. Times people could take to get a perm item could days, weeks, and even months and years. The claw was out for several months before I ever got a permanent item, but some people had gotten several in that time.

One account in this scenario might get a permanent item at it's first claw, while another might not get one until four months into the experiment, and another might get a small but steady supply of one every two months. Since we're not going into infinity but say one year, this creates an obvious difference in how many claw-perms each account would have earned.

The idea that everything will eventually balance out *only* applies assuming infinite time, which isn't applicable here for both the fact people die, can miss out on claws, and that this game is not going to be up forever. If you don't have infinite time, then someone is going to be lagging behind in permanent or even just good time-limit items.

And this is completely ignoring actual real world application, something statistics don't at all translate to very well for something like this.

It is inevitable that everyone will eventually have the same amount of freely earned items (assuming the game is never shutdown), the real world problem, which is the only question that really matters for a freeloader is *when* will those items arrive and how frequently can they expect to get them? They can't wait for an infinite amount of time.

After all, mathmatically there is a 1 in 6 chance to roll a 6 on a six-sided die, but that doesn't discount the possibility of rolling the die six times without rolling a 6. It might take you 13 times before you roll a six, which means your real world ratio of rolling a six on a six-sided die was actually 1 in 13. Or on the flipside, you might roll three 6s in six rolls and come out with a resulting 3 in 6 chance to roll a 6. That's where your theory is flawed. If you're lucky, the claw seems like the most generous thing ever, if you're not, at least you have a never ending supply of bandaids and Noob clap.

If you keep rolling the die forever your real world chances of rolling a 6 *will* in fact readout as 1 in 6 on a graph. But rolling a die forever is not a real world possibility and doesn't really matter as a result. The number of rolls it would take to get a six could ultimately be anything in a physical setting. You could get one roll of six out of six rolls, just like the math says, but you might also get six rolls of 6 out of six. There are chances of chances, and there are chances of those chances.

TF2's item system actually originally worked by rolling whether an item would drop for you or not, more or less like the bfh claw which decides whether you get good, passable, or unneeded/unwanted items. Valve eventually changed it because they found that while some people were getting items reasonably, a large number were going long stretches, months at a time without getting anything, exactly like the claw. Some people got by good with it, others didn't. In your case, you got by good, but that by no means makes you the typical case.

Since luck is the only thing deciding when your inevitable winnings arrive, the claw remains nonviable, unless you are lucky. it could be when you first roll a character and it could be the day after you get sick of it and uninstall the game, and that again is assuming your luck provides you with a permanent item that is actually of use. You could get several permanent items, but if they are all clothing, you're still not going to have an optimal experience, even less so if some of those clothing items occupy the same slot, which is certainly a possibility.

http://www.americancasinoguide.com/slot-...stics.html

Slot machines on average payout less than what is put into them.

Usefulness of 10 widgets and 1-days are debatable, especially with the variance of what they could be. a 1-day stolen kommandant smg isn't very usefull at all, I would say, and the widgets become less and less valuable the more and more you get them. At about 500 bandages, I'd say another 10 bandages is a dud claw.

If you buy claws, you could say the claw is very similar to a slot machine. The only difference is you get one free "crank" which is offset by a much lower comparable payout.

You keep comparing it to a slot machine, but we don't pay a thing, it's free! And your real world stats are useless cuz this is a game and not the real world. So please, just enjoy any free items and play the game with joy.

I'm going to quote Wikipedia here:

"In probability theory, the central limit theorem (CLT) states that, given certain conditions, the arithmetic mean of a sufficiently large number of iterates of independent random variables, each with a well-defined expected value and well-defined variance, will be approximately normally distributed."

In other words: with a large enough sample, we can assume this sample is representative of the entire population. Normally this works with around 30 observations, in this case we have at least 10 times as many (let's play it safe; I probably have missed a couple of days here and there).

We can give all of these observations, i.e. Claw drops, a value from 0 to 1, based on their usefulness, and we can then use this to draw up a Gaussian distribution for the value of these items.

The whole idea behind sampling is that you don't need to use the entire populations: you don't need to use The Claw infinitely. Going back to your example of rolling a die, it can happen that you get a long streak of throwing 1's or 6's. Over the course of a year, however, with 365 being sufficiently large to rule out 'luck', the average of your rolls will very closely approximate 3.5.

The same goes for Claw drops: the factor luck gets smaller and smaller, to the point where it's virtually non-existent after a certain time.

Why do you think one year is long enough for that to happen when the chances for getting items can be so variable, even more so when you take quality of drops into account?

You're using the claw (or rolling the die) only once a day. As long as a year feels like, 365 - whatever number of claws you miss, isn't necessarily all that much for a probability experiment. There is too much time for one variable (a high quality drop or a specific number of a die) to gain a lead, and when it has that lead, there can very easily not be enough time for it to balance out if the most rolled number continues being rolled. Or, if one person continues to be luckier than another.

A year would be sufficient if you used more than one account or another die, effectively rolling the claw an extra 365 times for every account you use and doubling the opportunity for each individual die value to come up. Then you could say beyond all doubt you've ruled out luck, but not with just one account.

When I say infinite time, I don't necessarily mean till the end of days, I mean that a cap like one year can leave plenty of room for people who haven't gotten nearly that many permanent items.

I've only gotten two permanent claw items in 2013, a pair of pants and a normal mrp, while others have gotten 4 or more, so obviously it's taking much longer for inevitable equalization to occur. (ignoring that a normal mrp and pair of pants aren't many people's first choice for a claw drop or even for just buying them.)

I would also say the quality of claw drops varies a lot more than 0 to 1.

I would rate drops as:
0: Widget you have a large supply of. (200+)
1: Time limit clothing.
2: Time limit emote.
3: Widget you do not have a large supply of. (100 and below)
4: Time limit weapon.
5: Permanent clothing or permanent emote.
6: Permanent Weapon.
7: Permanent High-Quality weapon. (Nailer, Omega Beamer, Battlerifle)

Keep in mind for the time limit ranking I'm ignoring the possibility for either 1 or 7 day time limits and the variance of widget drop quantities which would increase the quality variance further.

(02-01-2014 07:49 AM)NL-Biggar Wrote:  after a certain time.

And as I've said before, there is a point where this reasoning is completely moot.

Say someone doesn't get good claw drops until they've played it for 2 years because he's just that unlucky. Maybe near the end of those 2 years inevitablity gave hims some nice things, but you could hardly say he had a good run as a freeloader

As I described in a post above, I'd rank them from 0.00 to 1.00. This makes a lot more sense when doing math than rating them 1 to 7 or whichever number you'd pick.

And as I've said before, there is a point where this reasoning is completely moot.

I'm tempted to say 3 months should easily be long enough, but to be honest this is a rather arbitrary estimation. Generally, a sample of 30 is considered to be enough in a statistics.

Either way, as proven once again, discussing with you doesn't seem to achieve anything: it seems we have ended up with a constant repeat of "it comes down to luck", so let's agree to disagree.

It's more that your results are not what everyone can expect from one year of using the claw. The fact I can make this exact same thread and tell the exact opposite message is proof of this.

There is no guarantee that three months will be long enough for anything. The fact you keep insisting that is what makes no sense. And that's not to say, what's the point to try to play as a freeloader if it's going to be months before you can have anything decent?

Everything you've said comes down to "I'm getting things, therefor everyone is getting things." The problem with that being: Everyone is not getting things or at least not nearly as many or of equal quality.

Your statistics are bunk because they only show one person's experience with the claw. The only averages you've found are your own, which itself doesn't make any sense because you're assuming your claw results are not above-average themselves, which would be kind of hard not to since you are not comparing them to anyone else's results. That's like saying a 1.5 kdr is average even though you have no other kdrs to compare it to. Therfore it isn't an average, it's just what happened to *you.*

Again, the only thing that you are proving here is that you had a good time as a freeloader, not that everyone will have a good time as a freeloader as you insist on claiming.

Thought I'd throw my hat in the ring here. I don't get nearly that many unlimited items from the claw either, and think it's likely unrepresentative of what most players receive.

I started a "Free" account last week and want to see where it leads. I only did enough Sponser Pay to get start up weapons (Non Super, Or Uber, I may add). I want to see if the "Free" players can match up to the "Pay2Win" crowd.

I also want to use this account to see for myself if the Non Super/Uber Weapons can stand up to the newer weapons that are out.

Thanks for the Info, Biggar. Smile

It's not an art, it's just being lucky at the right time and place. Besides that isn't a true "Freeloader". A true "Freeloader" wouldn't even get anything for free or at all, even VP.

I don't think you understand what "freeloader" means. A freeloader is generally someone who takes advantage of people or opportunities for personal gain without having to put out for it. A true freeloader would get everything they could for free. Maybe you could use a better word for what you are describing, such as minimalist, luddite, or the like.
