But that's the challenge!
You've got to deal with that fact!

Consider using a long range shotgun (preferably assault) and a shotrange (suber/uber). Use your long range until mid-range, then finish with SR. Also get prestige ranks fast! It's kinda challenging, but rewards high!
If you are looking for a regular build, not so hard, buy a LR (SUPER/UBER!!!!) pistol and a SR smg (super/uber not necessary)

The primary fire and the alt fire sync in RoF and can deal up to 25+ damage alone and 40 damage with a critical hit, where as the regular long range pistol with the attachment only does about 15 max since you can't sync the fire modes together. And considering LR weapons, the LR pistol has a pretty fast fire rate for something labeled "very slow".

The vanilla SG pistol trades off accuracy and damage at longer ranges for short and mid ranged capabilities, while the modified attachment is just an extra sticker on the LR pistol for minor damage in those ranges when you feel the need to.
